John Winthrop Middle School Names Interim Principal

The New Year will mean a new face in the halls at John Winthrop Middle School. Beginning on Wednesday, Jan. 2 when the students return from the holiday break, Charles Macunas will be acting interim principal of the school.

After wading through the résumés and conducting an extensive search for a permanent principal, the district’s search team decided that none of the candidates matched the needs of the district at this time, according to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ruth Levy.

“It is very important to us to find the best possible fit for this position, someone who will continue moving John Winthrop Middle School toward excellence,” said Levy. “So we want to take our time and find the right person for the job, even if it takes a little longer.”

In the short term, the Region 4 Board of Education voted to appoint Macunas as the interim principal based on his experience in this arena and his résumé. His previous work included being an educator and longtime administrator in Region 17 (Haddam-Killingworth), where he served as assistant principal of the middle school, and principal of Haddam-Killingworth High School for a decade. Since his retirement in 2014 he has worked as interim administrator in Ellington school systems.

“We are very pleased with the choice to have Mr. Macunas come on board until the end of this school year. We are confident that he will assist us in moving our initiatives forward with his knowledge, experience, and dedication to our students,” said Levy.

She added, “We will begin our search for the perfect match for the principal position again this spring and we are hopeful and confident that we will find the best match for our district, our students, and our community.”

Former John Winthrop principal William Duffy left the district after Thanksgiving break this year to pursue a position in Avon.
