12/12/2018 08:00 AMWhere’s that cupola? The roof of the Old Saybrook Chamber of Commerce building at 1 Main Street is under repair: The roof will be replaced and the cupola rebuilt. And there’s something completely new: LED lights in the cupola that will change color according to the season: green for St. Patrick’s Day, for instance, and red, perhaps, for Christmas.
The cupola was leaking and the roof is in need of replacement, said Old Saybrook First Selectman Carl P. Fortuna, Jr. The new cupola was temporarily replaced on Dec. 3, to ensure it would fit, but further work is needed, including flashing and electrical work, before it can be permanently installed.
The chamber leases the building from the town, which is responsible for maintenance of the structure. Plastic currently covers the part of the roof where the cupola was located.
Although the hope was that the project would be completed in time for Christmas, it is more likely to be finished in the New Year.
The work hasn’t affected the day-to-day operations of the Chamber of Commerce, said Executive Director Judy Sullivan—”We’re business as usual.”
“We’re excited,” she said. “The new roof will be really nice. It’s a nice addition to the building, the way the tiles have been chosen.”
Sullivan is also looking forward to the addition of colored lights to the cupola, “like the Empire State Building,” she said, laughing.
Who will control the lights, she explained, will be worked out with Town Hall in the near future.
