Madison Celebrates Small Business Saturday Nov. 24

With Thanksgiving comes Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but local shops want to ensure residents have a reason to check them out, too, as holiday shopping takes off. On Saturday, Nov. 24, the Madison Chamber of Commerce hosts Small Business Saturday in downtown Madison with local shops and restaurants offering special sales and entertainment all day long.

Residents can come downtown and join the 28 businesses participating in the event. The day will include store specials, giveaways, a visit from Santa, food trucks, entertainment, and more. Folks who shop at a participating store will also be entered in a raffle for a Madison Merchant gift bag.

Shops will also be collecting non-perishable food items for the Madison Food Pantry throughout the day.

Beyond the typical sights, residents might notice one new addition to the day: a cop, dressed in a Santa costume, pedaling on a stationary bike on the sidewalk.

The cop in question is Madison Police Captain Joseph Race and while his costume will be all in good fun, he hopes the outfit and bike will encourage residents to come up and speak to him so he can tell them a story.

In May 2019, Race will participate in the Police Unity Tour, a bike ride to raise awareness for the officers who have died in the line of duty and to raise money for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum in Washington D.C. (See “Madison’s Race Will Ride for Fallen Officers” on page 17).

Race will be out on his bike in Santa gear in front of William Raveis Real Estate starting at about 10 a.m.

“I will pedal for a few hours and my hope is that people just stop and talk,” he said.
