North Haven Backs Stefanowski, Returns Legislators to Hartford

During the midterm elections on Nov. 6, which was characterized by large turnout and tight races, 70 percent of registered North Haven voters ventured out to the polls despite the inclement weather.

While Democrats did well statewide, winning the governor’s race and taking back control of the General Assembly, voters in North Haven largely supported Republicans on the ballot; 58 percent cast their votes for Republican Bob Stefanowski’s ticket in the race for governor, totaling 7,280. Only 36 percent of North Haven voters supported Ned Lamont (D), who won the statewide election.

State Representative Dave Yaccarino (R-87) retained his seat running against a Democratic challenge from Theresa Ranciato-Viele. Yaccarino garnered 7,772 votes, beating Ranciato-Viele by 26 percent.

“I’m honored and humbled that the people of North Haven trusted me to send me back” to Hartford, Yaccarino said. “I’m very proud of the bipartisan work...we’ve done. The real work starts now.”

Though pleased with his victory, Yaccarino said he worries about losing the progress the state has made as many other Republicans throughout the state lose their seats.

Ranciato-Viele hopes that her campaign will have an impact on the state.

“We were working for some very specific values—paid family leave, a fair minimum wage, bringing revenue back to the state,” she said. “I congratulate Dave on his win and I hope he takes away from this race, which was his closest so far, that these things are important to people in North Haven.

Incumbent state Senator Martin Looney (D-11) prevailed statewide, taking more than 77 percent of the votes cast, and earned more votes in North Haven than Republican challenger Erin Reilly, but only by a margin of less than 30 votes in North Haven.

Senator Len Fasano (R-34) will retain his seat in the 34th District after fending off a challenge from Democrat Aili McKeen. North Haven cast 65 percent of its votes for the incumbent, totaling 6,852 to McKeen’s 3,555.

Neither state senate candidate returned calls for comment following the election. On his campaign Facebook page, Fasano posted, “I would like to thank the voters of the 34th District for re-electing me to the State Senate. I thank you all for your support. I will continue to work hard for my district and the State of Connecticut.”

On her campaign Facebook page, McKeen posted, “We worked hard and had at least a little fun, but we did not prevail today. But it’s a marathon, not a sprint, and we laid a good foundation of data to build upon in the future. Thanks everyone for your support and efforts! See you all soon, as our causes still need advocates and activists, and we’re a team!”
