Braving dumping rain and long lines, Connecticut residents came out to the polls in historic numbers on Election Day, Nov. 6. In the days leading up to the election, numerous polls predicted at tight governor’s race between the two major party candidates, Democrat Ned Lamont and Republican Bob Stefanowski of Madison, but the next governor of the State of Connecticut will not be from Madison.

Voter turnout across the state was roughly 66 percent. Lamont took in a total of 694,694 votes to Stefanowski’s 650,113 and Stefanowski conceded the race to Lamont in the early morning of Nov. 7.

“A few moments ago, I called Ned Lamont to concede the race for governor and congratulate him on a hard-fought victory,” he said in a statement on Twitter. “I wish both Ned and the state of Connecticut success over these next four years…While this is not the result we would have hoped for, I am glad that we were able to draw so much attention to the tax burden in this state—at the beginning of this race we were laser-focused on cutting taxes, while other candidates were talking about raising taxes.”

Stefanowski cast his ballot alongside his family at the Madison District 1 polling place, the Senior Center, on Election Day. Stefanowski won in Madison, taking in 5,211 votes to Lamont’s 4,516 votes in town.

Lamont will take office with a sweeping Democratic majority in both the House and Senate. In a public statement, Lamont thanked his opponents for “a spirited race” and said he looks forward to working with Democrats and Republicans up in Hartford.

“Thank you for the great honor of electing me your next governor,” he said. “Together with our lieutenant governor-elect, Susan Bysiewicz, I will work hard everyday to grow our economy, make government more efficient, and improve the quality of life for all our residents...I am proud of Connecticut’s historically high midterm turnout in this year’s election, and I hear your message loud and clear—it’s time for a change. Connecticut’s residents reject division, and they want us to come together to address the big challenges we face.”
