Carney Wins Third Term over Pugliese Challenge

State Representative Devin Carney (R) won his re-election campaign for the 23rd Assembly District, which comprises parts of Westbrook, Old Saybrook, Lyme, and Old Lyme, taking 56 percent of the vote. This will be Carney’s third term in the General Assembly.

The campaign focused largely on economic issues, including the state debt, the cost of living in the state, and taxes.

Carney said he was “thrilled to have earned the support of the folks in the 23rd District. I look forward to getting back to work in Hartford and continue to be the strong independent voice of the district that I’ve always been.”

Democratic challenger Matt Pugliese conceded the race on Tuesday night, congratulating Carney “on a hard-fought race and his service to the community.”

Our camp has worked really hard and this has been an incredible journey over the last several months,” Pugliese said. “I’ve personally grown so much as a person from this experience.”

According to unofficial results from the secretary of the state’s website, Carney won with 7,182 votes (6,854 as a Republican and 308 under the Independent Party) to Pugliese’s 5,750 (5,566 as a Democrat, 184 under Working families).

Carney carried three of four towns in his district. In Westbrook, the vote was 899 to 537; in Old Saybrook, 3,255 to 2,572; and in Old Lyme, 2,294 to 1,890. In Lyme, Pugliese won 751 to 714.
