101st House of Representatives Seat Heads to Possible Recount

With unofficial vote tallies in from Durham and Madison, just a handful of votes currently separate Republican incumbent Noreen Kokoruda and Democratic challenger John-Michael Parker for the 101st House of Representatives seat. Early figures put Kokoruda ahead by roughly 25 votes, but both candidates have said they are open to a recount.

Connecticut state statute outlines the various terms and conditions that would trigger a recount, all of which will be considered in the coming days. However, officials from the Connecticut Secretary of the State office indicated that the margin for a recount is one half of one percent or less than 20 votes.

The current vote count is 6,246 for Kokoruda and 6,221 for Parker.

Kokoruda is seeking a fifth term for the seat.

“This was a very exciting election for our two communities and we will wait to see what the recount is,” she said. “Hopefully the numbers will stand that I am the victor and I congratulate John-Michael on a great race.”

Parker, a newcomer to local politics, won the vote in Madison while Kokoruda won the vote in Durham, both by narrow margins.

“I am grateful to have received such an outpouring of support from the residents of Madison and Durham today and over the past 8 months of this campaign,” he said. “As of tonight, the results are extremely close, and it looks like we’ll be headed to an automatic recount. I have been in touch with Noreen, and we will share more information as soon as we have it. I am proud that both of our campaigns have remained positive and respectful through to the very end, and I look forward to finding out the results once we ensure every vote has been counted correctly.”
