11/05/2018 11:00 PMAfter the hubbub of yet another stressful election season, members of the public are invited to put aside their differences and come together to honor the town’s veterans in a Monday, Nov. 12 ceremony at The Morgan School.
The free ceremony takes place at 10 a.m. American Legion Post 66 Clinton member Joe Diedrich, one of the event’s organizers, said the ceremony will feature a performance by The Morgan School band and chorus as well as a reading of the names of every Clinton veteran who died in war. Finally, the veterans in attendance will be invited to say a few words to the audience.
Diedrich said the veterans usually offer encouragement to the students or express their thanks to the crowd. John Lampe, a music teacher at The Morgan School, said that the chorus will sing two selections at the ceremony, “America” and “We Will Stand with You.”
Diedrich estimated that the event usually gets about 20 veterans, and cited the fact that many people can’t get the day off from work as a reason more don’t attend.
“I’m glad the veterans have the opportunity to have a brief moment in the spotlight,” Diedrich said. Diedrich said the day is important because it provides the opportunity for some of the veterans to receive a simple “thank you” from the public. Diedrich said called the gesture heartwarming, and said he is particularly happy for the Vietnam veterans to get recognition. Diedrich explained it wasn’t until fairly recently that the veterans of that conflict were more widely recognized for their service.
