Helping Neighbors with Jams for Cans in Deep River

The Deep River Food Pantry is ready for some food raising success at the annual Jams for Cans event, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Deep River Ambulance building, located at 284 Elm Street.

The event is an amalgamation of music, fun, and good deeds. Admission is five or more non-perishable items, toiletries, or a monetary donation for the Deep River Food Pantry. Some suggested items that are currently needed include quick breads, canned fruit, juice, tuna, cranberries, can soups, dry foods, box mac & cheese, peanut butter, jellies, personal hygiene items, and supermarket gift cards for fresh foods needed for holiday baskets.

The night will include a wide array of local talent, kicking off with a student showcase from Face Arts Music, which is sponsoring the event, then its time for singer-songwriters, the Butter Jones Band, the Dizzy River Band, and more.

“This is an opportunity to enjoy some great local music, while giving back to the community and helping out those in need,” said Frank Natter, owner of Face Arts Music.

The Jams for Cans event was the brainchild of Natter’s daughter Hillyn, 13 years ago. She has been a part of the night ever since and will be there this year singing. She also plays the piano and the drums.

“She thought of the idea and we said why not? This is a great family event,” continued Natter, who said of music, “It’s the universal language.”

“Everyone understands the language of music. Right? It gives kids self esteem and a purpose and, just like with any other team sport, it brings like minded people together to be part of a group to work together, learning about cooperation, patience, and getting along,” he said.

In addition to music, the Jams for Cans event will also include light refreshments and non-alcoholic beverages. Natter said that in the past there have been upwards of 100 people at a time at the event.

“There tends to be a kind of rotation of people throughout the night as the music changes and the bands change,” said Natter.

Donations of food and non-perishables will be collected at the door. For more information, call Face Arts Music at 860-526-1190.
