Chester Conservation and Energy Fair Offers Info for ‘Greener and Healthier’ Homes

In an effort to conserve and improve the collective environment in Chester and beyond, the town is offering its sixth annual Conservation and Energy Fair on Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chester Meeting House.

According to Rick Holloway, a Chester Conservation Commission and Chester Clean Energy Task Force member, the fair is a way to teach Chester residents about how to conserve and improve the collective environment.

“There will be a little something for everyone at this fair and we hope people will come out to learn more about the ways they can conserve energy in their own homes,” said Holloway. “Our goal is to bring up-to-date information about conservation to our residents and to make our town a little greener and healthier.”

He continued, “There will a lot of information available at this event. We hope people take advantage of that and ask all the questions they have that can’t be answered at Home Depot.”

Representatives from Connecticut Home Solutions (an authorized Home Energy Solutions [HES] service provider), Chester Conservation Commission, Chester Energy Team, and the newly initiated Sustainable Chester Committee will be on hand to provide information of all kinds, including building a thriving, resilient, collaborative, and forward-looking community.

There will be information available including details on composting, rain barrel use, native plants, clean water, stormwater pollution, successfully winterizing your home, energy efficiency ideas, what to recycle (including how, where, and why), and effective ways to encourage and support pollinating bees in the area.

There will also be updates on residential solar energy, LED efficiency, heat pumps, and energy-aware appliances.

As always, residents are encouraged to bring in their incandescent light bulbs or CFL light bulbs and receive up to four, 60-watt equivalent, energy-efficient LED bulbs for free. Residents will also be able to purchase a wide range of recommended specialty LEDs for homes.

In addition, town residents will have the chance to register to win one of 10 free HES audits. In the past, these audits have successfully resulted in significant energy savings for many Chester households.
