Every September, concerned citizens around the world gather together to participate in the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup Day. Locally, Save the Sound sponsors this cleanup and data gathering event. Each year, Haddam-Killingworth High School’s Spanish and French Honor Societies and Old Saybrook High School’s Ecology Club team up to clean Old Saybrook Town Beach and Harvey’s Beach. This year, students collected five bags of trash. A variety of refuse was collected, including 824 cigarette butts, 118 food wrappers, and 340 small pieces of plastic. Knowing that it can take five years for a cigarette filter to disintegrate and some plastic items can take 600 years, the group was very happy to have removed them from the beaches and kept them away from the birds and marine life that can consume or become entangled in these items.
