09/24/2018 12:00 AMThe Madison Senior Center has been evacuated following the report of an unknown white powder earlier today. Local police and fire responded to the scene and were able to identify the substance as cocaine.
The building was evacuated as a precautionary measure, closed for about two hours, and is now set to open again as officials clear the scene. First Selectman Tom Banisch said the report came though at 11:16 a.m. from the Senior Center on Bradley Road on Sept. 24.
“One of the seniors found something in the parking lot across the street and they brought it into the building and gave it to [Assistant Senior Services Manager] Heather [Noblin], so she called,” he said. “She called in the alert.”
Madison Police Captain Joe Race said the woman who picked up the bag was observed for about an hour to make sure there were no ill side affects and then released. The Guilford Fire Department tested the substance.
“It came back as a narcotic, potentially cocaine mixed with different substances used to cut the drug,” Race said.
Race said it was about two ounces of powdered cocaine as well as starch to cut the drug. Race said because no one was injured, the drug is essentially treated as found property and will be taken back to the police department.
“We don’t have anyone to tie it to right now because there are no cameras over there,” he said. “I’m sure we will ask around and see if we can come up with anything, but at this point it seems while the found property is illegal property, it’s found property nonetheless. That is where it stands right now, but somebody lost a pretty decent stash today, which is good for us.”
