Justine Higgins of Westbrook is the 2018 winner of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Connecticut Shoreline Branch $2,300 Gene St. Paul Early Education Scholarship. Higgins recently graduated cum laude from the University of Connecticut with a B.A. in human development and family studies.

During her time at UConn, Higgins repeatedly made the Dean’s List for the College of Liberal Arts and Science, achieved academic excellence within the Panhellenic community, and was granted the New England Scholar Award during her last semester at the university. Higgins volunteered with Big Brother Big Sister while also taking part in Gamma Phi Beta, a sorority based on building strong girls and empowering young women. Her passion for helping others was also reflected through Create and Communicate, a club she helped establish, which encouraged young children in local schools and hospitals to partake in arts and crafts.

Higgins will attend the University of Virginia to pursue her master of teaching degree for elementary education. Upon graduation, she hopes to teach 1st grade and is excited to instill a sense of curiosity and a lifelong eagerness to learn in her students.

This year, the AAUW Connecticut Shoreline Branch awarded two scholarships, including the traditional $2,000 award and a one-year award in memory of Gene St. Paul, a longstanding, actively involved member of the organization. The awards are based on personal goals, academic performance, and financial need. The recipient of the traditional $2,000 award is Marissa Simos of Guilford.
