Peter Barrett, probate judge for the Madison-Guilford District, has formally announced his campaign for re-election.

“It has been an honor to serve the citizens of Madison and Guilford for the last four years,” stated Barrett, a local attorney first elected in 2014. “I am committed to continuing the important work of our Probate Court together with an excellent team of clerks who are dedicated to serving our community. “

Probate judges provide a vital service to individuals and families, often when they are at their most vulnerable. The cases are increasingly complex matters concerning conservatorship, guardianship, child custody, and estates.

In the hundreds of cases that have come before Judge Barrett’s court, he has ensured that the probate laws are followed and that all parties are treated fairly and with compassion and respect.

“I’ve spent my entire career in the service of families trying to cope with hard decisions,” stated Barrett. “The seriousness of probate matters requires the probate judge to be experienced, knowledgeable, and compassionate, and to adhere to the highest of ethical standards.”

Barrett currently serves on both the Procedures Review Committee and Planning Committee for the Probate Assembly. He will be a presenter on conservatorship issues at the Probate Judges Symposium at Quinnipiac University in October.

A resident of Guilford for 31 years, Barrett and his wife, Jean, have four children: Kate, Maggie, Michael, and John. In the past he has served on the town’s Police Commission, Charter Revision Commission, and Pension Commission. He has also served as town counsel to both Guilford and West Haven and is a member of the Connecticut and U.S. District Court bars.
