Post-Primary, Local Races Set for November

Following the Aug. 14 party primaries, East Haven’s candidates for state senator and state representative appearing on the Nov. 6 ballot are set.

In the race for the 34th District State Senate seat, which represents East Haven, Wallingford, most of North Haven, and a portion of Durham, four-term incumbent Republican Len Fasano will face Wallingford Democrat Aili McKeen, the party-endorsed candidate who defeated challenger Josh Balter of East Haven at primary.

McKeen currently works in the insurance industry and previously worked for 23 years in the pre-press department of a North Haven commercial printer. A mother of two daughters, she has been a volunteer with Girl Scouts since 1994 and participates in advocacy for multiple sclerosis awareness and for victims of domestic violence.

Fasano, an attorney, was first elected to the 34th District seat in 2003 and became Senate Republican president pro tempore in January 2017. Late last year, Fasano said he would continue to focus on his role in the Senate, putting an end to speculation that he might run for governor.

For the 99th Assembly District representing East Haven, incumbent Democratic State Representative James Albis will face Republican challenger Robert “Bob” Parente.

Parente is employed by the Town of East Haven as the superintendent of operations for East Haven Public Service. He has served as president of the East Haven Rotary Club, is founder of the club’s annual Thanksgiving Dinner at the Senior Center, and is a recipient of the Paul Harris Distinguished Rotary Award. He was a member of the East Haven Board of Education for 12 years, a member of the Town Council for six years, and a six-year member of the Inland Wetlands Commission.

Albis was first elected in a special election in 2011 and is currently serving his fourth term as state representative in his hometown of East Haven. He is a civic member of the East Haven Chamber of Commerce, a board member representing East Haven for the Greater New Haven Green Fund, and a member of the Tuttle School Government Council. He was the town’s community development coordinator from 2010 to 2011.

In the 96th Assembly District, which serves the northern sliver of East Haven as well as the downtown, ninth Square, and Eat Rock neighborhoods in New Haven incumbent Democrat Roland Lemar will face Republican challenger Eric Mastroianni.
