Summer Backpack Program Seeks Help to Prevent Hunger

Tri-Town Youth Services is teaming up with the Deep River Public Library (DRPL) and Deep River, Chester, and Essex Social Services departments to fulfill a mission this summer: to ensure that all children are enjoying their summer months with full stomachs. But they need help.

“We want to make sure the children who receive free and reduced lunches during the school year continue to have access to nutritious food in the summer months,” said Tri-Town Youth Services Executive Director Allison Abramson. “Our summer backpack program was developed by social services and Tri-Town Youth Services to fill the gap this summer.”

The program began on July 12 and will run throughout the summer at the DRPL Children’s Garden. Each Thursday, food will be available for families at DRPL from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

On these days, children will receive eight food items as well as have the opportunity to participate in arts and crafts.

“We have already received a $300 donation from Paulson Training Programs in Chester, which will provide nutritious lunch and snack items for 12 families,” said Abramson.

Program organizers are hoping members of the public will help by hosting a food drive, packing food on Tuesdays at 10 a.m., or distributing backpacks on Thursdays at 10 a.m.

Some items that are needed include fruit cups, tomato sauce, whole grain cereal, pasta, peanut butter, canned soup, and more. These food donations can be delivered to Tri-Town Youth Services Bureau at 56 High Street, Deep River from Monday to Friday and from 9 a.m. to noon.
