Old Saybrook Town Meeting Gives Nod to Sidewalks, Roof Repairs

Electors at a brief July 2 Town Meeting voted to approve funds to repair the Chamber of Commerce building roof and make town sidewalk repairs.

The first vote approved the expenditure of $60,000 from the town’s Capital Non-Recurring Account for the repair of the roof of 1 Main Street, the town-owned building leased by the Chamber of Commerce for its headquarters. The contractor chosen for the work, Macri Roofing, was the low bidder at $88,000. To supplement the $60,000 approved, the town plans to tap a savings account into which Chamber of Commerce lease payments have been deposited. The total budget for the work when combining both funding sources is $100,000. That will give the town $12,000 of project contingency.

Also approved by electors on July 2 was an appropriation of $150,000 “for the purpose of hiring a construction firm to replace sidewalks at specific locations in Old Saybrook.”

Shortly after the July 2 vote, the town posted a request for proposals (RFP) for contract services for the sidewalk work. Bids are due back to the Town Hall by Friday, July 27.

Work on both the roof and sidewalk projects are planned to proceed during the current summer and fall 2018 construction season.
