On May 31, Daniel Hand High School students in 9th and 10th grades attended assemblies to address the adverse effects of using/abusing substances, an event presented by school administrators, MADE, and Madison Youth & Family Services.

This was a student-led assembly that started with seniors Emma Valdez and Dylan Brochard introducing the presentation and explaining why they choose to live free of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and other drugs. Athletic Director Craig Semple addressed the classes, as well, and stated that Juuling (e-cigarettes) have become a major problem in the school, as well as other schools throughout the country. He urged students to make educated decisions when it comes to their health, and not fall for predatory marketing tactics. The video “Be Your Best” was shown and a panel discussion with a Q&A session followed, which also included assistant principals Cynthia Schneider and Brian Bodner, as well as Director of Guidance and Counseling Jen Hawley, teacher and coach Sue Leckey, and School Resource Officer Phil Rosati.
