Ready to React to Saybrook’s Sidewalk Plan?

The Town of Old Saybrook wants to hear the public’s reactions to its preliminary plan for sidewalk improvements along the Boston Post Road in the vicinity of the train station. A public informational meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 18, at 4 p.m. in the first floor conference room in Old Saybrook Town Hall at 302 Main Street.

The plan calls for the construction and re-construction of sidewalks along Boston Post Road between Elm Street and Stage Road/River Street. The design project, just completed, was funded by a Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) grant from the State of Connecticut.

A copy of the preliminary plan is available for review in the Office of the First Selectman and in the Land Use Department, both of which are also in Town Hall.

Comments on the preliminary plan may also be directed to Town Planner Christine Nelson in the Town’s Land Use office.

When the town was awarded the $125,000 TOD grant in June 2016, First Selectman Carl Fortuna, Jr., said, “The benefit [of the grant] is to get shovel-ready construction plans and complete the road and pedestrian infrastructure to improve walk-ability and energize Town Center.”

Improving the walk-ability of Old Saybrook’s streets is the goal of another initiative the town is pursuing this month. At a July 2 Town Meeting, the town approved $150,000 to fund the repair and replacement of sidewalk sections along Old Boston Post Road near the Acton Library and along Main and College Streets out to Saybrook Point.
