On May 19, Josephine Anderson, a senior at Daniel Hand High School (DHHS), won the Youth of the Year Award. Presented at the Exchange District Club Meeting at the Hampton Inns & Suites in Stamford, Anderson received her honor from National Exchange CEO Tracey Edwards ahead of nearly 30 other seniors from all over the state.

A leader in all respects, Anderson earned the award on the basis of her essay detailing “Strengthening America, through Socially Responsible Communities,” performing seven years of leadership for both middle and high school Excel clubs, and being the founder of the Young Democrats Club. Other leadership capacities she held include being the co-captain of the DHHS ladies’ golf team and volunteering for the past three summers at Yale New Haven Hospital.

Anderson is a high honors student, member of the National Honors Society, Class Counsel officer, co-captain of the math and debate teams, and member of Model United Nations Club. She earned the Golden Tiger Award as the all-around performer above her peers and won this year’s SCC Scholarship Award. She also was a Sunday School assistant at the First Congregational Church in Guilford and a Reading Buddy at the Scranton Memorial Library in Madison.

Anderson plans to continue her education next year at Northeastern University in Boston where she intends to major in chemistry.
