Healthy Husky Run Brightening Up Clinton June 9

With summer weather here, fitness enthusiasts looking to take their workout outside for some fun in the sun to support a good cause will have the opportunity to do so at the Healthy Husky 5K Color Run on Saturday, June 9 at The Morgan School.

A color run is like a traditional road race, except at certain intervals participants will be doused in different colors of paint, so that by the end of the race the runners look like a well-used palette.

The race kicks off at 9 a.m. at The Morgan School, 71 Killingworth Turnpike, Clinton. The race will travel onto parts of Glenwood Road, Hurd Bridge Road, Cream Pot Road, and end back at The Morgan School. There will be mile markers and water stations along the route.

The run was organized as part of a leadership project by Morgan senior Madison Seeger and Erin Leviness for a class at school.

“We decided to do a color run because we wanted to do a project to bring the community together,” said Seeger.

Proceeds from the race will towards the THP Project Purple, a project that combats substance abuse.

Seeger said that the race was held in 2017 as well, though the process of organizing the race last year took much longer as the group had to learn what went in to pulling off this event—”I didn’t know what the process was like,” Seeger said.

Seeger said planning the event, which began last year in November, taught her the value of “time management and being organized.” Required tasks included getting permits for the race and coordinating with the Police Department, though Seeger said the hardest part about organizing the race was “advertising, and just getting the word out.”

Seeger was inspired to organize the race again in 2018 because of something she witnessed at the end of the race in 2017. Seeger recalled watching a family cross the finish line with their young child, and how much fun they were having.

“It was something we noticed that made us want to do it again,” said Seeger.

Seeger herself is not an avid runner, but said she has played sports “all my life, so being active definitely played a role to do the run.”

Seeger said the race will be staffed by volunteers, mostly students from The Morgan School. Seeger said the race is open to anyone. Free parking for the event will be available at The Morgan School.

Same-day registration for the event begins at 8 a.m. Registration for the project is available online at www.active.com (search “healthy husky”). The cost to register is $15 before the end of the day on Thursday, June 7, and $20 for registration the day of the event.
