05/23/2018 08:45 AMMadison residents looking to recycle their electronics usually had to go to another town or wait for a special event a few times a year to drop off their electronic recyclables, but not anymore. At the Board of Selectmen (BOS) meeting on May 14 the board voted to allow the acceptance of electronic recyclables at the Brush and Leaf Disposal Facility, also known as the bulky waste site, at the end of Ridge Road north of Green Hill Road.
Health Director Trent Joseph said while the town holds one-off collections for such materials, residents have mentioned that the current schedule isn’t convenient.
Joseph said he and First Selectman Tom Banisch spoke with the company Take 2, a company focused on secure electronics recycling, about having a bin at the bulky waste site that would be available to residents one day a week.
“Tom and I sat down with the owner of Take 2 and we realized that Take 2 also does some other great things,” he said. “They employee individuals with developmental disabilities, so it is a push for autism employment. What happens is they collect electronics from several different towns and they employ some of these individuals with disabilities and they are able to take the things apart and actually can refurbish them as well. We are talking about computers, monitors, TVs, some of these things that we get and they also do have a rebate program with the qualified electronics that they do recycle from each town.”
Joseph said allowing electronic recycling in town would just be more convenient for residents and wouldn’t add a burden to the town.
“We would have this bin, they [Take 2] man it and bring all of the supplies, they are in charge of all of the collection and transportation of what they collect from Madison, and I think this would be a step in the right direction for the town,” he said. “…It would probably be just one day a week, but that is better than one day every season or sometimes even just one day a year.”
