Memorial Day Events in Clinton, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook


The Clinton Memorial Day Parade will step off at Post Office Square on Monday, May 28 at 11 a.m., and proceeds to the Lower Green for the town ceremonies. Prior to the parade, wreath-laying ceremonies will be performed at the following cemeteries and monuments: Beaver Brook Cemetery, Old Post Road, at 8:55 a.m.; Clinton Police Department, 170 East Main Street, at 9:15 a.m.; St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Beach Park Road, at 9:30 a.m.; Town Hall Monument, 54 East Main Street, at 10 a.m.; Indian River Cemetery, 99 Church Road, at 10:10 a.m.; and Clinton Fire Department/Indian River Bridge, 35 East Main Street, at 10:30 a.m. The American Legion and VFW extends a special invitation to all veterans in Clinton to march in the parade. Gather in Post Office Square at 10:40 a.m. to join the parade line-up; no uniform is required. In the case of inclement weather, a Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at Clinton Town Hall, 54 East Main Street, at 11 a.m. For more information, call Joe Diedrich at 203-901-0945. The Clinton Historical Society will hold its annual Memorial Day Plant and Bake Sale and give tours at the 1750 Elisha White House (Old Brick), 103 East Main Street, Clinton, on Monday, May 28 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Old Saybrook holds its annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 28. There is a dockside naval ceremony with a rifle salute at the Saybrook Point Pavilion, 155 College Street, at 9 a.m. followed by a wreath laying ceremony on the Connecticut River. All participating units will assemble in the pavilion parking lot at 8:45 a.m. The parade assembly is at 9:30 a.m. in the Stop & Shop parking lot, 665 Boston Post Road, with the parade stepping off at Elm Street at 10 a.m., traveling across Route 1 to Main Street, and proceeding to the Veterans Memorial Monuments on the Town Green for the memorial program. Gil Simmons, a United States Marine Corps veteran and chief meteorologist for NEWS8 WTNH, will serve as the honorary grand marshal and master of ceremonies. Weather permitting, military fly-overs are scheduled during the parade. All veterans, particularly those from World War II and the Korean War, are invited to attend, and rides in the parade route are available. Westbrook’s Memorial Day Parade organized by the American Legion Anderson-Hoxie Post 103 is on Monday, May 28 at 10 a.m., sharp. In the case of rain, there will be a shorter route; weather will not cancel. The parade will form up behind the Riggio Building. The line of march will be available at the parade; the organizers hope to place World War II veterans at the head of the parade.
