North Haven Budget Passes by Slim Margin

North Haven voters approved the town’s $98,917,388 2018-’19 budget, an increase of 2.43 percent over the 2017-’18 budget of $96,568,811, by a 479 to 463 vote, a 1.7 percent margin. Following the May 15 referendum, the Board of Finance set the town’s mill rate at 31.18, up 0.65 mills or 2.13 percent from the 2017-’18 fiscal year.

Of the 16-vote margin, First Selectman Mike Freda said, “The closeness of it validates in my mind [that] the number-one thing [statewide] is taxes.”

On the town side, 2018-19 spending is budgeted at $45,864,552, an increase of 4.29 percent over the 2017-’18 approved budget of $43,977,312. The Board of Education budget is $53,052,836, a 2.7 percent increase over 2017-’18’s $51,648,899.

Freda noted that the Amazon development at the former Pratt & Whitney site is expected to come on line in 2020-’21, which will add an anticipated $4 million-plus to town revenues. His goal until then is to contain costs wherever possible.
