One hundred years ago, Charles Darrow, a soldier in the first World War for whom the American Legion Post #48 in Guilford was named, was killed.

Darrow was born on July 6, 1898, in the Yalesville section of Wallingford. Darrow, the son of Nelson Edward Darrow and Florence Estella Calhoun, was raised by his grandparents, Franklin and Alice Calhoun, who resided on Whitfield Street in Guilford.

During World War I, Darrow served with Company D, 102nd Regiment, 26th “Yankee” Division.

In the tiny hamlet of Seicheprey, France, on April 20, 1918, Germans attacked the American forces. During the severe fighting, Darrow, age 19, was killed.
