Musical Traditions Blend in ‘An Evening of World Music’ in Clinton

Music lovers in Clinton will be treated to An Evening of World Music at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9 at The Morgan School at 71 Killingworth Turnpike.

The free concert is being presented by the Clinton Public Schools Music Department and sponsored by The George Flynn Classical Concert Series. The concert will feature traditional American folk music by The Morgan School Chorus, according to director John Lampe, followed by the guest artists of East of the River, which will perform what Lampe described as a blend of music from Middle Eastern and Jewish cultures.

A press release for the event said, “East of the River was founded by internationally renowned recorder players Nina Stern and Daphna Mor. The project explores gems of the European classical repertory together with haunting and virtuosic melodies of traditions to the East, arranged and interpreted by musicians whose backgrounds include classical, jazz and world music.”

Lampe met Mor at a workshop in Guilford, and he and Mor discussed doing a program together.

“It should be a great time,” Lampe said.

Lampe his goal is to regularly expose students to different kinds of music from around the world.

“I stress to the kids that we are a global society. It’s good to be exposed to a culture we are not that familiar with,” Lampe said. “We haven’t done a lot of Middle Eastern music, so I’m learning a lot, too.”

Prior to the concert, Mor and the students will work on a piece together. Lampe hopes the concert shows people how important the arts are to culture.

“It would be nice to see the world not forget that,” Lampe said. “I’m really excited for this, and I think it will be a fun evening.”

While concerts in the George Flynn Classical Concert series (GFCC) lineup require attendees acquire free tickets in advance, this special event is not ticketed; patrons will be seated as they arrive.

“It is always the desire of GFCC to contribute and enrich the town of Clinton with wonderful music,” said GFCC President Elaine Godowsky.
