Breakwater Books Celebrates Anniversary with Art

It’s a piece of art celebrating all that is iconic in Guilford, so it only makes sense that an iconic Guilford store hosts the launch. On Friday, April 27, Breakwater Books is hosting a reception to formally unveil a poster of the Guilford Green, created by local artist Kate Mercer.

The poster, created through a combination of photography and digital art techniques, is a depiction of the Guilford Green and its surrounding shops, churches, and town buildings. The poster is set on fine stock and suitable for framing and all proceeds from the first run of posters—150 in total—go to benefit the Women & Family Life Center (WFLC).

For now the poster is sold exclusively through Breakwater Books and will be made available to the public for the first time at the reception, according to Breakwater Books owner Liza Fixx.

“The event is going to run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. here at the bookstore,” she said. “Kate Mercer will be here. She will have signed posters and she will be speaking with people about the process and what got her to the point of designing the poster. She is going to talk about how she selected Women & Family Life Center and there will be food and wine and live music.”

The event is free and open to the public. Fixx said the store is pleased to partner with Mercer and support WFLC. Fixx also said the launch of the poster coincides with an important date for the store as well.

“It’s perfect timing,” she said. “Independent Bookstore Day falls the next day and it also happens to coincide with exactly a year since our renovations and re-opening, so we thought, ‘What a great opportunity to launch the poster and celebrate being an independent bookstore and our renovated space.’”

Fixx bought Breakwater Books in spring 2017 and the store then went through a renovation including new bookshelves, painting, carpets, and the creation of two dedicated space for events and for children. With a dedicated space for events, Fixx said the store can now bring in authors and continue to support artists like Mercer.

On Friday, April 27 Breakwater Books at 81 Whitfield Street hosts a cocktail reception at the bookstore to introduce Kate Mercer and copies of the first printings of the poster, aptly named Guilford’s Green, for purchase, with all proceeds going to support the Women & Family Life Center. The reception will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. RSVP at Breakwater Books or by calling 203-453-4141.

Breakwater Books will handle the sales of any future posters. Underwriting of the additional posters will be dependent on other donors stepping forward.
