Shoplifter Captured in North Haven After Locking Keys in Escape Vehicle

A Waterbury man is under arrest after he stole $300 worth of merchandise from a North Haven Home Depot and attempted to flee in a stolen vehicle.

According to police, Samuel Lopez, 55, of Waterbury, entered the Home Depot on Universal Drive at 7:15 a.m. on Thursday, April 12 and retrieved a drill combo set from a shelf. The drill set had a value of over $300. Lopez then ran past the point of purchase and exited the store to a red BMW.

As Lopez attempted to enter his car, he discovered that he had locked his keys in the BMW. When police arrived, he was attempting to smash the car window with a brick. He thenĀ fled on foot before being taken into custody after a brief struggle.

An investigation revealed that the BMW had been stolen from Waterbury.

Lopez was charged with larceny in the third degree, larceny in the sixth degree, and interfering with police. He was released to the Waterbury Police Department who held an active criminal arrest warrant for him.
