Guilford Police Make Arrest in December Burglary

Guilford Police have arrested a man in connection to a December 2017 residential burglary on Long Hill Road in Guilford.

According to a press release from the Guilford Police Dpeartment, police began an investigation on Dec. 7, 2017 after residents of a Long Hill Road home returned from a family vacation to find their home, their vehicle stolen, and extensive damange had been done to the home rendering it uninhabityable. In total, the family suffered a loss of over $300,000 in damages and stolen items.

During the course of the investigation, Daniel Taylor was identified as the suspect with the Glastonby Police, CT State Forensic Laboratory, and the Westfield Police Department in Massachusetts. Taylor was arrested on a warrant on March 27 and charged by the Guilford Police Department with larceny in the first degree, burglary in the third degree, criminal mischief in the first degree, and criminal trover in the second degree. He was arraigned on March 27 at the New Haven County Courthouse and is being held on a $500,00 bond. Taylor is also suspected of committing numerous other burglaries throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts.

While investigating, police learned that Taylor and his girlfriend were using social media to identifiy individuals going on vacation or extended stays away from their residence. Evidence suggests that the pair would conduct internet searches to identify the home address of the individuals and then conduct surveillance on the residence to ensure it was unoccupied.

Guilford Police are encouraging the public to refrain from posting vacation plans to social media. Residents should also notify neighbors to check on your residence while away from home. The police department offers a home checks service to all Guiford residents who are planning an extended stay away from home. Residents can sign up for the service by visiting the Guilford Police Department and completing a "house check" form.
