High School Artists Awarded at Future Choices 2018 Juried Student Art Competition & Exhibition


Valley Regional High School artists and teachers won the 2018 Judy Streeter Outstanding School Award. Shown are State Rep. Several area high school artists were presented scholarships and awards on March 6 at Future Choices 2018, Shoreline Arts Alliance’s 34th annual juried competition and exhibition of student art, at the Sill House Gallery of the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts.

Shoreline Arts Alliance in conjunction with Lyme Academy College granted more than $800,000 in scholarships and awards. Awards for Best in Show and first, second and third place in the categories of Ceramics, Drawing, Mixed Media, Painting, Pastels, Photography, Prints, Sculpture, and Animation and Video were determined by a panel of professional jurors.

Awards for Best in Show and first place in Print, as well as a scholarship to Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, were presented to Emily Archer of Lyme/Old Lyme High School. As the Best in Show awardee’s art teacher, William Allik was the recipient of an award sponsored by Future Choices founder Earl Grenville Killeen. A new award in memory of Ruth Baxter-Tagliatella, who co-chaired this program for many years, was presented to Claudia Mergy from Lyme/Old Lyme High School. In addition, the Judy Streeter Outstanding Art Award was presented to Valley Regional High School in recognition of their arts programming.

Future Choices is an annual art competition and exhibition open to all high school students in grades 9 to 12 who live or attend school in the following Connecticut towns: Branford, Chester, Clinton, Cromwell, Deep River, Durham, East Haven, East Hampton, East Lyme, Essex, Guilford, Haddam, Killingworth, Lyme, Madison, Middlefield, Middletown, North Branford, Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, Portland, Salem, and Westbrook. Homeschool and boarding school students are also welcome to participate. Sponsors to date for Future Choices 2018 are Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts: A College of the University of New Haven, Connecticut Office of the Arts, and National Endowment for the Arts.
