At exactly 10 a.m. hundreds of students at Guilford High School (GHS) got up from their desks, left their classrooms, and walked out to the front of the school to participate in the National School Walkout on March 14. Thousands of high schools around the country are participating in the walkout today in honor of the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Florida and to protest legislative inaction to gun violence in schools.

GHS students stood outside the main entrance of the school for 17 minutes in honor of the 17 victims of the Parkland shooting. School administrators and Guilford police officers were on hand to ensure student safety.

Standing outside the school students held signs with messages like “Arms are for hugging”, “Where do I even start”, “While kids die the NRA lives”, “You cant fix stupid but you can vote it out”, and “Never again”. GHS student Brendan O’Callahan addressed the crowd of his fellow students, calling for change and action.

“We are all out here today for one reason – to make our voices heard,” he said. “…Our schools are not safe anymore…that’s an issue we need to address. Our lawmakers have failed us.”

O’Callahan said the movement is strong and encouraged students to stay involved. Students chanted, “Enough is enough” before marching around the circle at the front entrance of the school and then returning to class.

Students were not required to participate in the walkout and were welcome to stay in their classrooms. Superintendent of Schools Paul Freeman said while the administration did not encourage the walkout, no student who participated will face any disciplinary action.
