Seventeen junior varsity fencers from the Morgan High School fencing program took part in the Junior Varsity State Tournament that was held at North Haven High School on Feb. 10. The event included nearly 200 JV fencers from high schools around the state.

After qualifying for the JV tourney by winning the State Novice Tournament, freshman Maya Burnett turned in the top performance of the day for the Huskies. Burnett was initially ranked fourth after the preliminary pool round in the girls’ sabre competition. She then worked her way through the direct-elimination table and eventually took home the second-place medal.

Also earning medals for the Huskies were sophomores Isabella Recine, who earned fourth place in girls’ sabre; Lily Kozak, who finished fourth for girls’ épée; Thomas Baker, who placed fifth in boys’ foil; and junior Rebecca Cockley, who finished in seventh place for the girls’ foil tournament.
