The Exchange Club of Madison recently honored Josephine Anderson, the daughter of Judy and John Anderson, with the David Bell Scholarship Award for January Youth of the Month. The Daniel Hand High School (DHHS) senior was nominated by the DHHS faculty, and completed a competitive application including an essay titled “Strengthening America through Socially Responsible Communities,” performing outstanding DHHS and community activities, attaining an excellent grade point average, and demonstrating personal achievements and earning high value awards.

The Exchange Club of Madison’s Program Chairman David Bell presented Josephine Anderson with a $300 award and commemorative plaque. Anderson is a high honors student, member of the National Honor Society, Class Counsel officer, and co-president of the Exchange Excel Club. She was also a Rotary Interact Club Executive Committee member, founder and president of Young Democrats Club, co-captain of the math and debate teams, member of Model United Nations Club, and co-captain of the DHHS golf team.

During her four years at DHHS, she received the DHHS Golden Tiger, Brown University Book, Science Social Science, Mathematics, World Language, Helping Hand High School Community, and Connecticut Debate Association Awards. She volunteered at Yale New Haven Hospital, was a Sunday School assistant at the First Congregational Church of Guilford, actively performed as an intern for the Madison Democratic Town Committee, and was a Reading Buddy at Scranton Memorial Library in Madison.

Anderson has applied to college at Brown University, Dartmouth College, Tufts University, Northeastern University, and George Washington University, and intends to major in chemistry.
