On Feb. 3, 14 math students from John Winthrop Middle School participated at the Coast Guard Academy in New London. Twenty-five teams from the Eastern Chapter of Math Counts, with more than 191 students, spent the day in both individual and team math competitions. Five teams made it to the state competition, held at the University of Hartford, on March 10. The John Winthrop team of Dexter Newman, Nicolas Wyszkowski, Devan Gopalakrishnan, and Sam Rector came in third of all teams. In addition, Sam Fetter and Ben Proctor scored high enough to attend the state competition as individuals. Jordan Azzinaro scored a third place finish among the alternates.

Students prepare for the competition by attending a Math Counts activity held weekly at John Winthrop during flex period. The Connecticut Society of Professional Engineers sponsors this nationwide middle school math competition. The 2018 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition will take place in May in Washington, D.C., and will be live-streamed on ESPN3.
