The North Haven Historical Society and Museums sponsored its first fundraiser for the Martha Culver House Restoration Fund. The Rising Sun Tavern was open to the public at the start of the holiday season, and all donations made that day were deposited to the restoration fund.

A highlight of the open house was a visit by members of the Fifth Connecticut Regiment, a recreated New England Continental regiment. The group was represented by Bill Duncan, who acted as a British soldier; Henry Bessonett, who played the tavern’s innkeeper and a colonial soldier; and Alice Bessonett, who portrayed the innkeeper’s wife. Approximately 120 people attended the event, and $800 was collected.

The Town of North Haven owns and has been restoring the Martha Culver House, a 19th-century Greek Revival home located on Quinnipiac Avenue. The structure was willed to the town when the last member of the Culver family, Martha Culver Smith, died in 1925. The property has since provided space for a fire house and ball fields, and the home has been used as a library by the town. Recently, the town has allowed the North Haven Historical Society to use the home as a museum.

While the town has completed exterior renovations and structural repairs, the society plans to use the money from the restoration fund to complete interior painting and other cosmetic work needed to improve the museum. When completed, the home will once again be open to the public and used as an educational resource for North Haven students. To donate to the restoration fund, mail a check to: North Haven Historical Society and Museums, Martha Culver House Restoration Fund, 27 Broadway, North Haven, CT 06473.
