Police have determined that Joseph Reifer, 72, and Susan Barron, also 72, died of gunshot wounds in their Essex home yesterday.

On Feb. 20, Connecticut State Police received a call that led them to the couple's home at 31 Prospect Street in Essex Village for a wellness check. Both residents were dead when police arrived.

According to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the post-mortem examination determined that Reifer shot and killed Barron and then himself.

One area resident described the older couple as "super sweet" and very quiet. Locals around town seemed shocked by what one called a "horrible" thing.

According to State Police, detectives from Central Major Crime responded to the scene and have assumed the investigation.

"This incident remains under investigation," said Sergeant Eric Haglund.
