The short, powerful talks from experts in science, business, the arts, and more have become hugely popular on social media and are intended to spur more thought and conversation amongst their audiences, though if you’re watching the talk on a tablet, the resulting conversation might be a little one-sided. The Henry Carter Hull Library is ready to take the talks to the next level via its new, monthly program, TEDxHCHLibrary: A Community Conversation.
The program is held at the library (10 Killingworth Turnpike) on the third Tuesday each month. Participants watch the TED talk, then have a chance to discuss it with their fellow viewers over coffee and tea.
“The program has been going great,” said Lynn Hidek, the program’s coordinator.
Hidek said that the series of program will run until June. The next program in the series is “Medicine or Miracle: Cutting-Edge Science Saving Lives” on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 9:30 a.m. Hidek said the program looks into cases in which people have overcome severe illness.
“You may know someone who was totally incapacitated and made it. Was it a miracle or great care?” she asked. “I’m looking forward to the participants sharing their background. All of us in a room exposed to people with great expertise and very articulate.”
Though the program ends in June and then is scheduled to resume in September, Hidek said that she would be open to extending the program in the summer if the demand is enough.
“It’s the kind of thing that can spark other programs,” Hidek said.
Noting that the March to June talks are not yet set, Hidek said she likes to see the community response to programs while she considers future talks to schedule.
“I want to be responsive to the people who come. I do put a little twist, too, to attract new people,” Hidek said.
