Acton Library’s Sunday Hours Return

Many residents will raise a cheer as Acton Public Library’s Sunday hours have returned.

Funding to open the library for 30 Sundays a year, from the middle of October through the middle of May, was restored last spring during budget negotiations after a two-year absence and amid pleas to restore the service. Last fall, however, when Sunday hours might have started, library management found itself short-staffed due to the serious illness of the late library director Michele Reed Van Epps and the retirement of reference librarian Fran Anderson.

With new staff now hired, library management can once again staff the Sunday openings.

“I’m very excited. Sunday is a very popular day. Families really like the Sunday hours, especially during the winter, and adults now have a place to go on Sunday afternoons to read the newspaper or do research,” said Assistant Director and Children’s Librarian Karen Guigno.

Starting on Jan. 9, Acton Public Library will be open Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. until the middle of May.

Guigno said that many residents, both adults and students, rely on the library’s computers and printers because they don’t have them at home; even if patrons may have a computer or smartphone, they may not have access to the Internet. With Acton Library offering free wi-fi access to the Internet, patrons can search the net from the library for free.

Guigno said that students also value having a quiet place to go on Sunday afternoons to research, write, and print out assignments due in class on Monday.

Other events planned at Acton Library this winter, including the event described below, are posted on the library’s website at actonlibrary.org.

Take Your Child to Acton

On Saturday, Feb. 3, the Acton Library celebrates for the seventh year the international Take Your Child to the Library Day
