12/06/2017 11:01 PMThe Madison Lions Club held its 54th annual Miss Be Thankful You Can See program at the Maritime Grille in Guilford on Nov. 15. Abigail Edgecumbe was identified as the Daniel Hand High School (DHHS) senior who will represent the club in this capacity for the 2017-’18 year. A photo of Edgecumbe’s eyes appeared on a letter requesting support for eye research and treatment sent to Madison-area residents recently. Edgecumbe was selected for this honor by the Guidance Department staff at DHHS. This Be Thankful You Can See theme was started by the Madison Lions Club in 1963.
Edgecumbe is an active senior with many diverse interests. She plays the flute in the school band and also the piano. She is a member of the pit orchestra for the annual DHHS spring musical. She enjoys languages and may major in English-creative writing, and minor in French in college. Edgecumbe completed a 13-week program to become a peer advocate. She also joined Mentoring Matters, and mentors a 5th grader weekly. In addition, she is a reading buddy for an elementary school student. She is an active member of her church’s youth group, and works part-time at the Scranton Library. Edgecumbe was sponsored for the Miss Be Thankful Award by Mary Curran of the DHHS Guidance Department. Edgecumbe’s parents and sister Zoe were present for this event.
The Lions club’s chairman for the evening was Don Williams. Speakers included Curran, who presented Edgecumbe; David Longobucco, who gave a history of the Miss Be Thankful program; and Steven Daigle, president of the Connecticut Lions Eye Research Foundation and also the Lions Low Vision Centers. Edgecumbe was presented with a gift from the Madison Lions Club, and Daigle received a letter of commitment indicating that the club will present its donation to his two organizations at the district’s Mid-Winter Conference in February.
