Four Daniel Hand High School students attended the Boys and Girls Leadership Program held this summer at two locations: boys at Eastern Connecticut State University, girls at Post University. A celebration in honor of the students was held at the American Legion Hall in Madison.

The American Legions Boys and Girls program is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for United States high school students. Participants in the program learn the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of franchised citizens. The training is objective and centers on the structure of city, country, and state governments. Operated by students elected to various offices, Boys and Girls State activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, and law-enforcement presentations.

Rosin Beirne was selected to go to Girls Nation, which follows right after the Girls State Leadership program. The first Girls Nation was held in 1947. It is a firsthand experience giving high school girls practical insight into how the federal government works. Only two girls from each state are chosen to go to Washington, D.C. for a week. They will meet with the president and members of Congress. They will also lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
