Deep River to Rename Town Hall

In Deep River, everyone knew “Smitty” and he knew them. As the longest-serving first selectman in the town’s history, Dick Smith was a dedicated public servant. He served 13 terms as first selectman and was also the town constable. He passed away in March, 2016.

To celebrate his life and service, the town’s main civic building will be renamed the Richard H. Smith Town Hall at a dedication service on Tuesday, Nov. 28. Family members including son, Rich Smith; daughter, Christine Ailo; and many long-time friends will attend.

Rich Smith says that his family is honored the town will make such a meaningful and lasting tribute to his father.

“I think it is fitting to rename the town hall because it was his second home for 27 years. When you walk in there, it feels like he is going to walk around the corner laughing. He is everywhere you look in Deep River–especially in a lot of people’s hearts. I can’t say that about any other politicians I know. He truly loved the town and the people in it.”

The dedication service is at Town Hall, 174 Main Street, Deep River on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 6:30 p.m., following the Board of Selectmen meeting at 6 p.m. Space is limited, so registration is requested. For more information, call Gina Sopneski at 860-526-6020.
