Phones Down, Eyes Up: Scouts Hope to Save Branford Teens' Lives

A new traffic sign targeted at texting will driving will soon be posted prominently where some of the town's youngest drivers will see it -- the Branford High School(BHS) driveway.

The sign, which reads "Phones Down, Eyes Up" was delivered to the Branford Board of Education by members of Girl Scout Troop 60200 on Nov. 15 and will be posted at the school driveway exit by the end of December. The scouts hope the sign will help promte safe driveing, prevent accidents and save lives.

The scouts worked with the district, BHS, Branford Police, Branford Public Works and the Planning and Zoning Commission to have sign approved for installation and use.

At the Nov. 15 BOE meeting, scout members described taking on a "Don't Text and Drive Initiative" and the steps they took to develop and produce the 18" x 24" traffic sign. They also explained how they took on bringing about the sign on as a project to earn a Bronze Star, Girl Scouting's highest honor.
