Stephen Spurrell has received the New Haven Middlesex Association of Realtors (NHMR) 2017 Community Service Award. Spurrell was recognized at the NHMR’s Centennial Celebration Luncheon, Legislative Rally, and Expo held at the Oakdale Theater in Wallingford.

Spurrell is a lifelong resident of Guilford and is affiliated with Page-Taft Christie’s’ Guilford office. He served eight years as a Guilford police officer, during which time he instituted the town’s K-9 program. He became the first K-9 officer in the program and later adopted the police dog, Lancer, and gave him a home to retire to.

During his career as a builder, Spurrell made a commitment to the Guilford VFW to raise all the money and materials needed to build the VFW a new home. For many years he raised money annually for the project, which is now under construction.

Spurrell also belongs to a shoreline volunteer group known as the “Pizza People,” which every month provides free pizza, clothing, blankets, and toiletries to the homeless and those in need in New Haven. In addition, since 2010 he has contributed his traffic and safety skills to The Closer to Free Bicycle Ride, which raises money for the Smilow Cancer Hospital. Spurrell also participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge in 2015 to raise money in honor of a client’s family member who was stricken with ALS.
