Michael Callis of Killingworth earned the honor of eagle scout on Oct. 16. Callis began his scouting career as a tiger scout in 1st grade with Pack 18. He continued through cub scouting to achieve the highest award, the Arrow of Light, and then moved up to Boy Scout Troop 18. As a member of Troop 18, he has held numerous leadership positions, earned more than 21 merit badges, earned the World Conservation Award, and demonstrated leadership and community service by organizing and carrying out an eagle project.

For his project, Callis coordinated a work crew that standardized and re-blazed more than 36 miles of trails in Cockaponset State Forest. Under his direction, scouts completed the project, which included more than 200 service hours.

Callis has now advanced to junior assistant scout master of Killingworth’s Boy Scout Troop 18 while he completes his senior year at Haddam Killingworth High School. He plans to attend college and major in the medical field. Callis’s parents plan to have him formally recognized at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony this spring due to his busy senior year, including his cross country, indoor, and outdoor track schedules.
