11/07/2017 11:00 PMA familiar face in Clinton, Sergeant Jeremiah Dunn received an award from the Connecticut U.S. Attorney’s Office for his efforts giving back to the community.
The award, presented on Oct. 25, was given to 26 state officers for their “dedicated and invaluable service. They have made lasting and purposeful contributions to ensuring that Connecticut is a safer and more secure place to live,” according to the Connecticut U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Dunn, who has served with the department for 25 years, said he was “very honored” when he found out he would be receiving the award in early October. Dunn said he was particularly proud of the fact that Police Chief Vincent DeMaio took it upon himself to submit Dunn’s name for the award without telling him he was doing it.
Dunn said he doesn’t give back to the community because he wants the recognition.
“I do it because it’s the right thing to do,” Dunn said. “That’s the way I was raised. I was taught at an early age.”
Dunn was born and raised in Clinton, and said he feels a particular affinity for donating his time and efforts back into the community.
“This town provided a lot to my family,” Dunn said.
Besides being on the Police Department, Dunn has served on the Board of Selectmen and as a fire investigator. He currently serves as the department’s public information officer, runs the Clinton Citizen’s Police Academy, acts as the president of the Clinton Police Benevolent Association, and helps coordinate the department’s charitable endeavors in addition to his regular work.
The U.S. Attorney’s office, in its award, stated, “He is truly an example of community policing spirit.”
“I still feel obligated to give back,” Dunn said.
