11/06/2017 11:00 PMThe races for first selectman and Board of Selectmen (BOS) were uncontested, but other boards in town are going to be seeing some new faces and new leadership. Voter turnout was a modest 29 percent.
Current First Selectman Tom Banisch (R) keeps his office for another two years as the Democrats and other third parties chose not to run a candidate this time around.
For the BOS—a five-member board with a two-year term—Democrats Al Goldberg and Scott Murphy kept their seats as well as Republican Bruce Wilson. Republican candidate Jean Ferris was elected to fill the fifth seat on the board vacated by Republican Bob Hale. The balance of power remains the same—three Republicans to two Democrats.
For the Board of Finance, a six-member board with a four-year term, Jean Fitzgerald (R), Judith Hession Friedman (D), Ken Kaminsky Jr. (R) were seated. Candidates Owen Charles (G) and Peter Roos (R) will not be seated.
For the Board of Education, a nine-member board with a four-year term, voters were asked to select five candidates. Jessica Bowler (R), Alison Keating (D), Violet McNerney (R), Matt Parthasarthy (D), and Emily Rosenthal (D) are seated on the board. Michael P. Abbondandolo (G) and Kirk Barneby (R) will not be seated.
For the Board of Assessment Appeals, Shirley Taylor (D) and William Lewis (R) were both elected.
For the Zoning Board of Appeals, Richard Gilbert (D) and Jason Brown (D) were seated. William H. Piggott (R) and Jeanne Wilson Stevens (R) did not take in enough votes to be seated.
For Zoning Board of Appeals Alternate, incumbent Charon Squitiero (R), the only candidate running, was re-elected.
