Essex Voters Reaffirm Needleman for First Selectman

Turnout was high in Essex, with 51 percent of the registered Essex voters participating in the Nov. 7 municipal election.

Democrat Norm Needleman was returned to the first selectman seat with a decisive win over Republican challenger Vince Pacileo. Needleman won 1,509 to Pacileo’s 772 votes.

The current Board of Selectmen members, Stacia Libby and Bruce Glowac are both unchallenged this year, and Pacileo’s 772 votes did not exceed Libby and Glowac’s votes of 1,204 and 1,047 respectively, so he will not be a selectman.

Democrat James Francis was challenged by Republican Bruce MacMillan for town treasurer; Francis won 1,327 votes over MacMillan’s 896.

For the Board of Finance, cross-endorsed Democrat Keith Crehan will keep his seat with 2,134 votes. He will be joined by Democrat Ethan Goller, who beat Republican Philip Beckman 1,248 votes to 997.

Democrat incumbent Loretta McCluskey beat Republican challenger Judie McCann for the Essex Board of Education with 1,200 votes to 1,014.

The available seat on the Region #4 Board of Education is going to Democratic challenger Kathryn Sandmann who topped Republican Don Fitton 1,474 votes to 744.

Uncontested races included Mark Bombaci for the Board of Assessment Appeals, Tax Collector Megan Dwyer Haskins, and Town Clerk Joel Marzi.

For the regional Probate Court race, Democrat Jeanine Lewis won locally and regionally over Republican Anselmo Delia; in Essex the vote was 1,485 to 744.
