Shoreline AAUW Luncheon Shares Stories of Notable Women

Connecticut is home to many great women, and on Saturday, Nov. 4. the American Association of University Women (AAUW) Shoreline Branch will share some of their impressive stories at its annual luncheon.

The event features food, a raffle, and a presentation by Cynthia Wolf Boynton, author of Remarkable Women of Hartford, which includes profiles of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Ella Grasso, and Beatrice Fox Auerbach.

AAUW-Shoreline Branch Publicist Viki Littell said the annual luncheon has been a fixture since the mid-1990s.

“We have had terrific speakers in the past. People who are interested in hearing about these remarkable women should attend,” Littell said, adding with a laugh, “People come to us just to see the raffle!”

All are invited to participate in this year’s program at Clinton Country Club.

The AAUW is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that serves as the nation’s leading voice promoting equity and education for women and girls (www.aauw.org). The AAUW shoreline branch was founded in 1951 and currently has about 80 members.

Littell said that statistics show that on average women earn less money than men, and the organization works to address the disparity. The group is also interested in supporting young women who pursue careers largely populated by men, such as engineering and science.

“Our branch provides post-grad scholarships to help break through the glass ceiling,” she said.

Littell said that proceeds raised at the luncheon benefit the local scholarship program.

“National AAUW gets some money, and money goes to the local branch,” she said.

The AAUW Annual Luncheon is at the Clinton Country Club, 128 Old Post Road, on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 11 a.m. The cost is $50 per person; for tickets, visit shoreline-ct.aauw.net.
