Uncontested Seats Highlight the Deep River Nov. 7 Municipal Ballot

Deep River will have more unopposed candidates this year than contested, in the upcoming municipal elections on Tuesday, Nov. 7. Two of the 17 races listed on the ballot have an actual contest.

The ballot, available for download at www.deepriverct.us, lists the Democratic party candidates’ names above the Republican’s, followed by the write-in votes.

Angus McDonald (D) is uncontested as the first selectman. McDonald has served as the interim first selectman since April 2016, being appointed to fill the vacancy of the late Richard Smith.

The Board of Selectmen has two spots open and Duane Gates (D), appointed to fill McDonald’s role on the board when he was appointed first selectman, is returning to the seat with William Burdick (R) looking towards the second spot.

Incumbent Republicans are largely unopposed on the ballot. Amy MacMillan Winchell was nominated again for town clerk and Thomas Lindner was once against nominated and is uncontested for his roles as both treasurer and agent of the School Deposit Fund. William Ballsieper and John Wichtowski will return to the Board of Finance as Republican nominees, and Darlene Pollock returns to the Board of Assessment Appeals.

Democratic party nominee Lisa Bibbiani is uncontested and will retain her seat as tax collector.

The two spots on the Board of Education appears a bit more crowded with nominees, but with four seats open, due to the number of terms expiring in 2017, all candidates will be seated. Republican nominee Nelle Andrews is running to keep her seat and is joined by the party’s other candidate, Mary-Elizabeth Massey. The Deep River Democratic Town Committee is putting forward Lenore Grunko and Robert Ferretti.

The Deep River Library Trustees has three full-term positions being sought by three candidates: Patricia Risinit (D) is seeking re-election to the committee, while Republican nominees Stefani Award and Alexa Jamieson are looking to fill the remaining spots. Krista Colvin (R) will fill a vacancy with two years remaining with the library trustees.

There is a race for the open Regional School District #4 Board of Education seat; the parties have put forward Richard Daniels, Jr. (D) and Mark E. Grabowski (R).

District 33’s judge of probate vacancy is being sought by Essex attorney Jeannine Lewis (D) and Anselmo Delia (R), an attorney from Clinton. The probate court for District 33 is located in Old Saybrook and serves nine towns, including Chester, Clinton, Deep River, Essex, Haddam, Killingworth, Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook.

Polls are open on Tuesday, Nov. 7 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Deep River Public Library Community Room, 150 Main Street. For more information, call the Town Clerk at 860-526-6024. Voter registration can be done online at https://voterregistration.ct.gov.
