Sign Up for a Free Energy Check in Clinton

The Clinton Energy Committee is reaching out to low income residents who may qualify for a free energy efficiency service to reduce their yearly energy bill.

Committee member Paul Gebauer said to qualify for the Home Energy Solutions-Income Eligible (HES-IE) program, a single person must earn less than about $34,000 per year. According to the program’s website, a family with an income below the state’s 60 percent income median may also be eligible.

Program participants receive an energy efficiency review of appliances, LED light bulbs, showerheads, and door sweeps, as well as a blower test to identify cracks where heat and air conditioning is lost from the home. Gebauer said the service also includes a safety check of the home’s propane, gas, or oil system by New England Smart Energy.

“Basically, they get $1,000 worth of service for free,” said Gebauer.

Gebauer estimated the yearly savings could be as high as $200 off of an annual energy bill.

“Each month’s electric bill is going to go down,” he said.

Gebauer says the Energy Committee is motivated to promote the program after learning that locally only nine people had signed up for the free service.

“It was pretty disappointing,” he said.

The committee encourages all eligible residents to participate and has a plan to go out doorknocking at Clinton’s mobile home parks and apartments. For every service completed, Gebauer said $25 will be donated to Families Helping Families.

“It’s a very cool thing,” Gebauer said of the donation..
